What Causes It

Acne is a skin disease that occurs in about 75% of all males and females between the ages of 11-30. But even adults can get acne and some have hereditary predisposition. It typically occurs during puberty, when androgen levels rise and cause skin glands to produce excess oil. Follicles connecting glands to the skin pores can become clogged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. These skin plugs can result in different forms of acne on the face, back, chest, shoulders or neck. Though acne often disappears after healing, inflammation or deep break-outs can result in scarring.
