What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also commonly known as collagen induction therapy, creates hundreds of tiny pinholes in the top layer of skin. By using an electronic device, called the MicroPen Elite, tiny, superficial pinholes trigger the body to start healing. The human body is remarkable and by essentially tricking it into thinking the skin is actually damaged new collagen is created which improves the damage caused by acne scars, sun spots, wrinkles and numerous other skin imperfections.
Stephanie Snowden, the Nurse Practitioner who completes all microneedling treatments (and all other aesthetic treatments) at The Hall Center, explains the similarities between microneedling and acupuncture, “They both cause the human to body to heal itself. There is no need for surgery or invasive treatments when you utilize the body’s natural healing response”. In conjunction with microneedling, the treatment becomes exponentially more powerful when combined with PRP, which stands for platelet rich plasma.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): Your Own Custom Beauty Serum
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a treatment which is specific to each patient. Blood is simply drawn from the patient and then processed to separate platelets (which are responsible for blood clotting, i.e scabs) from the other parts of the blood such as red cells. After the treatment is finished, the patient’s platelets are then topically applied to the treatment area.
Stephanie Snowden describes PRP as a “Biologically perfect beauty serum. Since the platelets are taken directly from each patient the body immediately accepts them as a beneficial healing agent when they are topically applied. PRP becomes even more powerful when combined with microneedling, since the tiny pinholes allow the platelets to penetrate even deeper into the skin.”
Now that we have a clear understanding of how the treatment works here are 6 benefits of microneedling with PRP.
1) It Improves the Skin!
Microneedling has been shown to improve the damage caused by many different types of skin imperfections including acne scars, sun spots, malasma, stretch marks, and wrinkles.
Compared to other aesthetics options, microneedling with PRP is non-invasive and does not use surgery, injections, or harsh lasers to achieve the benefits.
3) Short Recovery with Minimal Down Time
Stephanie Snowden instructs her clients to stay out of the sun and to not wear makeup for 24 hours. Patients describe their skin feels tight and slightly warm after the treatment and they return to work later that day. Within 24-48 redness and tightness usually subsides.
4) Your Body Heals Itself
As described in the paragraphs above, microneedling with PRP jump-starts the body’s healing response. It’s this reaction that causes new collagen to form which improves damage from skin imperfections such as acne scars, wrinkles, sun spots.
5) Comfortable and With Minimal Pain
Usually just a mild topical numbing agent is used in the treatment areas. Since microneedling only penetrates the top layer of skin, there are very few sensory nerves to trigger pain. It’s overall a very comfortable and relaxing experience. Stephanie Snowden has even has a couple patients fall asleep during their microneedling treatments!
6) Long Lasting
Since Microneedling with PRP delivers long lasting benefits. When working on imperfections such as scars or sunspots, the results are permanent unless new scars are formed or the patient continues to be exposed to the sun without protection.
